Calls for Protection for the Health Challenged

Just days preceding America's Independence Day, a group of revolutionaries are calling for protection for the lives of the millions living with critical health conditions to ignite what "REVOLUTION on Wall Street" event organizers call a "love revolution" in both charity and social justice.

On June 29th, on the 40th anniversary of the historic Stonewall riots, people from all backgrounds and sectors of society will gather atop 37 Wall Street, overlooking the New York Stock Exchange and Federal Hall, where the Bill of Rights were signed and George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States of America.

Billed as "3 ways to win 7 battles at 37 Wall Street," the organizers are launching a new charity program: getavisionFUND. The innovative microfunding program redirects a percentage of credit card processing transaction fees directly to people facing serious health and financial conditions.

I never wanted to be an advocate!

But, now I have no other choice. My initial anger has turned into ACTION.

I wasn't angry about contracting Stage 4 Burkitt's Lymphoma nor HIV -- except being mad at myself sometimes.

The anger came in witnessing the victims of sudden illness and the horrendous social services and healthcare systems that they are barely able to navigate to survive.

I never planned nor intended to be permanently disabled.

Have you?

When I received the emergency call from my wonderful Kaiser oncologist in 2007 informing me about the aggressive & rare cancer I had contracted, the orders were:

1. Get into the hospital immediately

2. Prepare to be hospitalized for long periods of time over the next 6-9 months for in-patient high-dosage chemotherapy and, if possible, a bone marrow stem cell transplant at the end of the year.

3. Prepare to be unable to work for at least a year.

My head was spinning as I sublet my place in LA, tried to disassemble my business of 20 years and begin in-patient chemo within a matter of days.

I was your typical workaholic and loved my business. I was sure I could continue working from the hospital and just going mobile... until something called "Chemo Brain" quickly settled in and I was too physically weak to do anything.

FAST FORWARD => to yesterday morning!

Here I am RELUCTANTLY applying for permanent disability...

Why would want to be on disability??? After all, I've always been passionate about my work and thrive on being creative and productive. I'm thinking... "why and how the heck would I end up here? This just isn't me."

Meanwhile, the comments from the other side of the desk are more like:

1. Why didn't you apply for permanent disability when you first were diagnosed? After all, it could take a year and a half or two before you even see any assistance...

2. Why didn't you apply for permanent disability after you received your bone marrow stem cell transplant?You should have started this process before now. You'll be denied several times and it'll take a long time.

3. Why don't you apply for welfare and food stamps for a couple of years until you're finally approved? I know around $350/mo isn't much, but it's something.

Again...

Here I am a few months ago with Janet Carballo, an RN and Social Worker at Kaiser Permanente.

My California State Disability Insurance had run out in June 2008, so Janet was encouraging me to go to the Social Security office and at least get the application process going for disability -- just in case.

No... not me! I'm fighting to WIN!

Hi John,

It is Janet Carballo..........just barely. I just got out of the hospital. I was in ICU with sepsis. I lost a whole week of my life and I don't know where is went. I had one round of chemo therapy and it totatlly knocked out my white blood cells. Then I had an infected port a cath and had to have that removed. I knon't know how you did it. I want to give up now and all I have had is one dose.

It's been several months since I've posted anything on this site. At the end of 2008, I was having more health problems, then in January I started to have increasing problems in my limbs, perhaps from the chemo and bone marrow stem cell transplant. But, I'm encouraged and am so thankful to be alive right now at this moment in history. Though I've been struggling with the idea of being permanently disabled, my faith has been strengthened. And as my finances have been depleted, I've never felt as rich in spirit as I do now.

Transplant "Birthday" Surprise

This week marks my "1st Birthday" since my bone marrow stem cell transplant. (Transplant patients often refer to their transplant date as their "birthday.") I'm excited that it coincides with the news and presentation by City of Hope's Dr. John Rossi in Palm Springs. I'm really glad to have been asked to briefly speak.

A Nov. 13 Associated Press story reported that an American with AIDS living in Berlin had apparently been “cured” of the disease using a targeted bone marrow transplant.

While researchers and the man's doctors cautioned that it could only be a fluke, it does hold out hope, according to John Rossi, Chair and Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology at the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope in Duarte.

Rossi will be one of the featured speakers Thursday at the City of Hope's Research Advances in HIV/AIDS Community Forum at Hotel Zoso in Palm Springs.

During the 90-minute program, Rossi will discuss how breakthroughs in stem cell therapies might come into general use in the not-too-distant future.

For Rossi, the possibility of a breakthrough in treating HIV/AIDS using stem cells is thrilling. “This is what my work is all about,” he said.

In the Berlin case, the patient's immune system was destroyed using chemotherapy before he was given a donor bone marrow transplant.

The donor marrow had a rare, but naturally occurring genetic mutation which made it resistant to almost all strains of HIV, apparently killing any remaining virus in his body.

“Imagine if we could replicate that in the lab with a person's own stem cells,” said Rossi, who is also an adjunct professor at the University of California, Riverside. “Then reintroducing them back into the patient.”

The advantage to using the patient's own bone marrow is there is no chance of rejection.

Then, Rossi said, a portion of the patient's bone marrow would be removed and genetically modified in a lab. Once the modification was completed, a partial bone marrow ablation would be the next step.

“Just to make enough room in the bone marrow for the modified cells to grow,” said Rossi. “Because the bone marrow isn't completely destroyed, this procedure would able to be done on an outpatient basis.”

Once the re-introduced modified stem cells begin to produce disease-resistant “daughter cells,” the chances of effecting a “cure” greatly increase, he said.

At this point in the research, “we've done a very limited number of trials, with promising results,” Rossi said. “But since (City of Hope) is a nonprofit facility, we don't have the money to do a full-blown FDA trial. We're hoping to find a drug company who can pick up (the study) for the FDA trial.”

Surviving Cancer Economics

How exactly are cancer survivors to survive the coming economic calamities that face us? How will those people who have battled for their lives overcome the economic challenges to their very survival? I'm talking to myself, as a fellow cancer survivor.

I'm all in favor of finding cancer cures and am indebted to City of Hope National Cancer Research Hospital in Duarte, CA for literally saving my life. Likewise, I support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (lls) for their active support of cancer researchers and am helping them to do more funding. And I think the StandUp for Cancer event at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood in September which was simulcast on the major tv networks was a fantastic move forward.

But there are some much more critical issues for everyday people. Survival.

For myself, I am forever grateful for the California State-mandated insurance program MRMIP and the ADAP program which supplies my HIV meds. If I lose either one, I'm pretty much DOA.

When I was first diagnosed with HIV in 2005, I subsequently lost my insurance, which was a very frightening experience, just one month following the diagnosis. In what must have been miraculous, I was able to be one of the chosen few to get approved into the MRMIP program and got onto the Kaiser Permanente coverage, which ultimately saved my life from cancer, which I contracted due to the HIV. The ADAP program provides me with nearly all of my meds covered, without which I could not survive.

These are literally my lifelines. In the face of the economic crash we're facing, who knows how long these programs will be in place.

If the ADAP funding dries up, whether it's cancer or AIDS, I'm pretty much sunk, knowing what the cost of the meds are which are keeping me alive now. As my personal and business financial structure collapsed during my cancer battle, I could not even begin to consider how to pay for the full cost of the meds.

We need to take a look at the vast number of layoffs across the country and the fact that these people will not be able to even think about getting onto the super expensive COBRA or any other healthcare plan. Then what?

While searching for a cure for cancer is very important, for the vast majority of people, the problem is facing life-and-death choices and mere survival. I think this is the dialogue most people are going to be engaging in over the coming months as the economic catastrophe resulting from the past eight years of the current administration leaves people literally facing serious challenges.

The stress of cancer therapy and becomming a "survivor" is physically and mentally torturous. To heap on financial stress is sometimes what leaves people thinking "why fight it."

I know. I asked this question myself, but couldn't give up, even knowing the financial hardship that I would find myself in following treatment.

Let's fight for the people and families and friends who are facing these issues right now.

Change.org will soon be launching a blog for cancer issues and I really want to support them in helping to mobilize people on behalf of those who can't fight for themselves.

I know in my battle with Stage 4 Burkitt's Lymphoma, I had to have people fight FOR me. Now it's my time to fight for others!

Brad is a Senior Producer at R/GA in NYC, which has been super supportive through Brad's health challenges. From his website CancerisBoring.com:

"My first fight with lymphoma was in 1996 and have since won my battles sending this monster back into remission. This past fall I was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma. I had six tumors throughout my left/right axilla, liver, lung and groin areas. The treatment was aggressive and I found myself in and out of the hospital five times throughout the course of three months, some time with no white blood cells or immune system."

My tests were unrelated to cancer.
One was to confirm that the loss of use in my left arm is permanent, and the new news there was that the pain sydrome it created will continue to worsen. That did not make me very happy.
The second was to try and find out about my own heart problem that landed me in the hospital. What a surprise, no one so far has any idea, which just means we go to more "invasive" tests. And we both know what that means.
My son has his tests, and we will get the results right then and there, on the 12th. He is such a trooper, a real inspiration. Thank you my friend for asking about him! It warms my heart.
